Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Headquarters Camp Michigan Virginia Fifth Reg’t Michigan Volunteers, Comp D December 21st 1861 [ ? ] for a long time I have been thinking of writing to you but there is Li little chance or convenience to write [ ? ] my correspondence is limited to a verry small no but as you have written I must of course answer until do it with pleasure and will look for another You tell me you have not much to write about but anything from there is perused with avidity occasionally use get hold of an old Michigan paper and it has to go all through the Co. but I suppose there is no use in trying to tell you anything about our doings on the Potomac for you get evry move that is made in the papers long before it would reach you by letter since leaving Ft. Lyon we have had but little to do except drilling and guard duty we are in a verry pleasant healthy place and the boys are all well contented and enjoying themselves first rate. it is warm pleasant sunny days and bright noon light nights just such weather as you would + suppose to be down in the old Dominion state. Orve if you have not bought that land yet I wish you would not for congress will surely make an app- -ropraition of land for the soldiers and I want you to go into the woods with me for I am going back to the old Peninsula State again when the war is over which I do not think will be longer than [ ? ] summer but I must write some to dollie and will close Jim
