Regiment: 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Abraham Lincoln Head Quarters 2d Wis. Volunteers Camp Tillinghast V.a. January 6th 1862 Hark a voice from — Dixie Dear Brother John yours of Jany 1st I received last night and was glad to hear from you once more and I hope you will keep your word good for I would like to hear from you every week if no oftener. I am glad that you are doing well and have steady work for the winter for I think that there will be good times next spring dont you John, I speak of labor not of war for it is hard to tell where we poor Sagers will be or how we will fare by that time I sometimes wish that I was there to work with you making shook but I dont suppose I would be contented as long as this trouble continues for I am very fond of a roving life but I got greatly disappointed when I joined the Army. for it is like the Father + Child I cant go any where without the concent of the Officers, but they are all quite liberal and let us go whereever we wish when I get a little uneasy once in a while, I think of the old saying that a contented mind is a continual feast and I try to proffit by it. the Mason + Slidell offair has caused a great deal of loose talk among the people but I hardly think there will be any thing done about it now as they are given up to Old Johney to do with them as he sees fit but dont trust the old fellow to far. he is honest with snug watching but it wont do to take your eyes of him and give him a chance O, say, we will watch the rebbels and leave Old Johney Bull for you dont give an inch to him if you want any help call on us we can spare any amount of men + money for Uncle Abe is rich + strong. I think we are good for the rebellion + for Old John Bull to if he sees fit to try us on what do you think John hant it so well I will leave it for time to tell wheather Old England is for us or aga =inst us and then will be the time to act acordingly we had quite a snow storm last night the snow still lays on the ground and it is quite cold but when the sun comes out it will soon drive it. tell Eleanor that I take the will for the deed as she cant knit on fingered mittens it shows that her will is good enough to if she knew how, but tell her that I have a splendid pair that was sent me from La Crosse Wis by some of the warm hearted maiden of that little loyal City in the far distant West land of the free the company is out drilling and I am in the tent writing. I suppose you would like to know how that happens well I am on water squad to day. I suppose you would like to know what that is, well I will tell you, every day there is two men detailed to carry water for the cooks and so it came my turn today and I carryed the water this morning from the fort about one hundred yards from here and now I have nothing to do untill tomorrow morning 6 oc, we were mustered in on the last day of Dec and we will get out pay in a day or two now, we have $26 coming to us now. I am going to send a small sum home but you need not say any thing about it to the folks it is now time for the mail and I must go and see if there is any thing for me the mail has not came yet and I will try and finish this sheet the boys are comeing in from drill and it will be hard work to write now, and so I must close you wished me a happy New Year I wont confine you to one I wish you menny write often to yours truly one G.W.Fisher
