Regiment: 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Tillinghast V.A. Dec 3d, 1861 Dear Sister I now seat myself for the purpose of writing you, a few lines to let you know that I still live and enjoy good health. and when this reaches its destination. I hope it will find you, and all of the family, enjoying a liberal share of the same. I have not received that letter that you was to write that Sunday, but i have not given it up yet for it is liable to come in two days after it is mailed,,,,last Sunday I got a pass, and went to the third and fourth maine regts, for the purpose of seeing some of the Newburgh Boys and I was well satisfied with any visit for I saw scores of old acquaintances and among the lot was. G. H. Fisher of Augusta, he is as fat and hearty as a buck, and almost as big as a man I did not see any one from Portland that I was acquainted with, by the way, do you remember the man that was with me in Portland, when I was there last,,,his name was Whitney….. well,,we parted in Albany. N.Y. and I never heard from him, or did I know where he was, untill I saw him in the fourth Maine regt the last Sunday; and we were very glad to meet. Although he is a rough looking fellow,, he has a heart as big as an ox,, and it is in the right place. I stayed with the boys two days, and it was the happiest two days that I have seen for a great while: not saying that I am discontented at all. I stayed with the Piper boys of Newburgh on the (north road) if you know where that is Henry. Stone, is in the 4 regt, I suppose you remember him, he used to work for father there is nothing new going on here in camp worth writing, the weather still continues cold and blustery. there has been but little snow here, there is none on the ground now. there has not been more than a half an inch this winter it is so cold in my tent now, that I have got my overcoat on. and i have to stop writing to warm my hands it is about seven oclock, in the evening and I can hear two or three, fiddles, playing about me.. and in another direction I can hear singing, and if I should go into some of the tents I should see some pla =ying cards, and in some others I should find some reading the Bible; I have not heard from home for a long time, I should like to hear from All. I have written to him twice and have received no answer it is getting late and I must close we had a grand time here Thanksgiving. the officers got up a big dinner, (I believe in the old saying, that it is better to be born lucky than rich) and I was the Cols orderly. that day, and I had an invitation to dine with them and of course I excepted it it is about time for tattoo and I will close by asking you to give my love to all the folks, John, in particular, and receive the same from your Brother G.W.Fisher Co B 2d Regt Wis, Vol Washington DC writeassoonasyoureceivethis write as soon as you recieve this from your affectionate brother [ ? ] PS. my candle is almost out write as soon as you receive this
