Regiment: 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Head Quarters 2d Wisconsin Volunteers Camp Tillinghast Va. Dec. 25th. 61 Dec 27th 1861 Dear Sister Nell, I now sear my= -self to answer yours of the 6th which I received more than a week ago. the reason that I did not do so before is that we have been busy building winter quarters and I was so tired nights that I did not feel like writing, but we have got them finished and snowed into them. I suppose you would like to know how they are made. I will tell you. in the first place we had to carry our logs about quarter of a mile and then we built it up like a country pig pen about six feet high and then we put our tent over it. we have a California stove in the enclosuer, and it is so warm and comfortable in here that I would not exchange it for the best room in the United States [   ?   ]. in Portland last wednesday was Christmas I suppose you know, how did you enjoy it. I worked hard all day, I hope you enjoyed it well. I thought of you all and wished you a merry Christmas I am glad that you are getting along so well. tell John to be steady for when this war is over I have a project in view and it will just suit him but tell him to give him= =self [ ? ] uneasyness about what it is, and ask him if he knows how to write if he does I should like to hear from him we are going to have a division drill tomorrow we have to fire 40 rounds of blank cartridges, we go through all the movements of a field fight the weather is clear and not very cold but quite windy the boys are all very healthy as for myself i never was in better health, since I left home tell Cora that she shall see her Uncle some of these days, there I have written all that i can tonight. I will try to be more punctual hereafter write as often as you can and tell John to for I am allways anxious to hear from you all, give my love to all the pretty and to all the family and receive the same from your affect Brother G.W.
