Dear Sister,
I received your kind letter of January 21st today and was very glad to hear from you and that you
were all well. I am not very well at present but I am gaining fast. I am in the hospital at
Washington. I have been here about two weeks. I have been examined but do not know yet
what will be done with me. I shall try to get a furlough as soon as I am able to get around.
I am in a good hospital and got a good doctor. You wanted to know if l got enough to eat. Well
we get all we want and more too, such as it is when we are in camp. But on the march we do not
get fed quite as good. While in camp we get pork, beef, bread, potatoes, beans, rice, dried
apples, coffee, tea, and sugar. A soldier need not grumble as long as he gets enough to eat. Well
Amanda, I can’t think of much to write today. Write soon and often. Tell Emma she must write
a longer letter next time and tell Grove to write.
Good bye
From your absent brother,
William W. Crocker
