Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Sept. 10th 1863 My Own Darling Wife. To day I have been building me a bunk and I have built it so wide the boys have been joking me about it. they say it is for two and you are coming down here. “do you see it.” I confess I cannot hardly yet. I am Officer of the days for five days. good thing. nothing to do. only attend “Guard mounting” and see that the camp is policed in the morning and at night receive and give to the “Guards” the Countersign. and see that lights are out at “taps”. I will send you the “Countersign” for to night. It will pass you through the lines of any army in the U.S. Service. to-night. I shall look for a loved word from you by this eves mail “Wedding Words” “A jewel for my lady’s ear. A jewel for her finger fine. A diamond for her bosem dear. Her bosem that is mine. “Dear glances for my lady’s eyes. Dear looks around her form to time. Dear kisses for the lips I prize. Her dear lips. that are mine “Dear breathings to her soft and low Of how my lot she’s made divine Dear Silences. my love that show For her whose love is mine. “Dear cures lest clouds should shade his way That gladness only on her shine That she be happy as the May. Whose [ ? ] is one with mine “Dear wishes hovering round her life And [ ? ] thoughts and dreames divine To feel with perfect “Joy” the wife Whose happiness is mine.” Dont think the above is original. it is only appropriate. I wrote Louise and Libbie [ ? ] a day or two since enclosing those Photographs. with my compliments of course, The third Michigan is in Troy, N.Y. Mary Swenson. and Ellen Balcomb. are going to school at G.R. on the East Side. Mary writes Fields. she was up to see Mother and she was quite lonesome. Mary is much improved in mind since her last to me and speaks of her late sorrow. not in so many words- but in meaning- as a thing of the long ago. and appears to wonder why she ever felt as she did. and seemingly wishes to know what people thought of her grief. Perhaps I did not read as meant, but yet such is the history of our race. Should you go out to your Grandfathers if you wish me to write you there let me know about what time you are going and then when you leave, a few days before, Love to all Love and several kisses for my wife.
