Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Winfield S. Hancock Adjutant Office 6th Regt 1st A.C. May 17th 1865 My Darling Wife: Yours of the 12th bringing words of cheer reached me this afternoon finching me nearly over my hurt of yesterday. I never supposed Mrs. Barr cared for any think but Shoulder straps. She is not a woman to mourn except outwardly for any thing. Providence might see fit to inflict upon her in the way of loss of friends. You speak of my years in your last. If my appoint- ment is confirmed. it is not for a year but at the pleasure of the Govt. and I think after we are fully organized it will not be a very bad thing. you can be with me as well or nearly so as though I was in civil life and I have been a soldier so long that I hardly know what else to do. I heard again to day that we would be filled up by recruiting to thirty thousand and was said to come from Gen Hancock in that case Clarke will stand a chance for recruiting service. I do not think the 1st Army Corps will be kept in Washington this summer but where who can tell. and were at not for having you where we could live to gather I would not care. for to me there is no happiness like having you for my constant companion. I will send you something with this and more until the whole have been received. Time passes so slowly with me those days. it seems months since we were together mislead of weeks. a love. Always your. Some Kiss, Gardie [On Envelope:] Mrs Mary B. Clark Grand Rapids Box 215            Michigan
