Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp near Stonemans Station V.A. Army of the Potomac March 9th 1563 My Loved Mary Yours of the 28th ult. came to hand last eve as did that box with its contents all safe many thanks for the same. I have written Lieut. Brewer says all the time for four days. but not quite so bad as that. to-night I am lonesome and lonely. I beleive Brewers feeling so bad. affects me. He has just read me her parting letter. She says she cannot ask forgiveness nor make an apology she goes because she could not stay and if she goes to happiness. She said she should be so happy if to misery she should not long survive and they would not hear from her. She has allowed fate to waft her to her own destruction. I pity her brothers. Byron will resign if he does not find things better than he expects. he has applied for a short furlough to try and find her I cannot any thing interesting or pleasing then why write at all. should I write my true thoughts they would terrify you. How I wish this cursed Rebellion would wind up. I am heart sick of it. March 12th         This is the first time in a century I have been guilty of leaving a letter unfinished for so long. Brewer has heard from his Sister. She went through all right was married immediately. and says she is as happy as a claim on a slab. Lieut. has a furlough and is going to visit her and perhaps pay a flying visit to Michigan. Received a letter from Lieut E. Baxter last eve he (one would think by his way of telling it.) dearly loves Soldiering. Says Mrs. Nixon is roughing it, saw her awhile ago. She was occupying herself in training the young “soldiers” hot to shoot. She may be a good thing have in a family, but I had rather my wife would not be exposed to all the [ ? ] of camp life. It is a rough hard place even for men. What would it be to woman. I have nothing to write so write nothing. With much love and one kiss certain Ever your Gardner
