A Kiss
Head Quarters 6th Rgt 1st A.C.
Washington D.C.
July 5 1865
My Mary
My Dear Wife;
I have to
most respectfully beg my
Wify’s pardon for neglecting
her so many days. I intended
to write her night before last
and again last night but
Monday was the day before
the Fourth of July and yester=
day was the Fourth all day.
Every man in the Rgt had
to have a pass and I had to
sign them and was very
busy. We have been here
eight days and night before
last was the first time I have
been out of camp. then I
went to the theatre last night
the same and I cannot say
I care to go again soon.
I have received three letters
from you since writing all
of which had a five
[ ? ].
When I sent for that money I
did not think to tell you
not to send it if by so doing
it would make you short
for I could get along better
than you. Please tell me the
state of your finances. I expect
to be paid soon now our muster
Rolls are in. It is pleasant to
have money in ones pocket
but it is not actually necessa=
ry for me at present. About
those certificates if it is not
necessary to have the money on
them. They will keep and be
all right I suppose. David
returned a few days ago he
is not yet well and is in Hospi
tal as a nurse. The Vermonters
are all well except Ellen
she is very weak and it is not
likely she will live many years
Leonard was at home and
sent me word that unless
I could get him a place
soon he should enlist in the
regular army. I could
get him a place with our
Sutler but whether it would
be best or not. If it should
be necessary to have the money you
might send those certificates
to me here for signature
Mary I love you often and much.
A kiss.
Always yours
Gardie
