Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Moretown July 28th 1862 Dear Gardner and Mary Yours of the 21 was gladly rec’d I had got very impatient and nervous now I must scold you for you are very naughty and if you live to have children grow up and leave father and mother almost alone you may possibly realize some of your mothers feelings but I hope you will not have the trials which has fallen to my lot no one but those who have had similar trials knows the sleepless hours of anxiety and almost a going which I have endured since our first born son broke from ever once happy circle could & know whether he was living or not it would be [ ? ] consolation it is hard to live in suspe.. if we could always trust in God he would help us to bed our trials without [ ? ] 27 I have been washing yesterday was a very hot day we got a heavy shower last night so I had plenty of water our water has [ ? ] up you can tell what a bother it is now at this time, well the folks are praying some [ ? ]not got near done was grass is very brown, but keeps me on my feet the most part of the day to do my work and take care of the turkeys and chickens I have almost 60 of both we milk five cows now except two heifers before long sold one cow a few weeks ago for ninety five dollars dont you think that was a pretty good price but they say the man that bought wouldnt take a hundred it has been [ ? ] sickly in this vicinety there have been a number deaths perhaps you have heard of Mr Martin mason death, well I recolect that I wrote about it Howard Howes and Dutton Silsley have been so it ever [ ? ] Marson died till a week ago last friday Howard died he has been a very sick man he was a kind husband a good neighbor few in their place would be [ ? ] more than [ ? ] and I dont know of anyone Brigham Doclere [ ? ]told him to the last he was getting better Silsley employd Brigham till he thought he should die then in front for [ ? ] he got better went to work some and is very sick now father went down there this afternoon said he was more comfortable. Leonard wants to know how business is out there says he is going to [ ? ] out somewhere he says tell you he has been to work at the rate of fifty dollars per month keeping says he can get two dollars and quarter a day now I guess he will work at [ ? ] some. Allen is at Pinckey [ ? ] ther all [ ? ] to school expect she will be at home in two weeks we did not hear of Mr Fisk death only as Mr [ ? ] a paper what was the matter with [ ? ] many [ ? ]you spend time to write a little about [ ? ] does she [ ? ] or go alone Gardner dont write half a letter I should think you both might fill a whole sheet I want you should write abou the folks out there did Aunt [ ? ] get a letter from me some time ago if she did I should think she might write [ ? ] thinks you you did not care much about his picture [ ? ] you wish I would stop writing [ ? ] will please write a good long letter and be [ ? ] good boys love to all kiss [ ? ] for me and send a lock of her hair when are you coming to VT Your Mother
