My Mary
My Own Darling Wife,
Saturday
eve once more, and it being
after “Taps” I know of nothing
better for me than writing to
my little girl.
I have had no word
from you since yours of the 27th
ult. the longest time I have
been without a letter from you
since last Sept. except when
on the march. To-morrow
we move our camp. wood is
getting so scarce we go without
half the time. Well perhaps not
quite so bad as that but the
men carry it nearly two miles
on their backs.
I think I did wrong in wishing
to have you stay in Vermont
this winter. for I am afraid
you will not enjoy yourself so
well as among old friends.
I was so selfish I did not think
of this until lately. but when
you wish to go to Mich. say so
and you’ll have my consent.
I have been writing nearly all
day on Co. business and dont
feel very bright
Col. Berdan has
been discharged from the
service. ill health the cause
