My Loved Mary
I have not written you
this week because with Brewer I have
been making out Pay Rolls. and two days
ago he was ordered out on Picket. So
I have had to finish them alone.
Yours of the 17th inst. I received tonight
I had heard by way of Will McNiel that
there was some good thing on the way to
me from kind and loving hands. and
hearts. It is very doubtful if they ever
reach us here. There is no regular
conveyance. Express Co’s only undertake
to deliver to Washington. and I learn
that there are upwards of twenty thousand
parcels for Soldiers in the stare
[ ? ] of
one Express Co. in that city.
The great news of the
day is the passage of the Conscription
Act by Congress. The Senate has yet to
consider some slight amendments. but
in a few days it will be the law of
the land. I am glad the head of
the
Natation Nation is getting aroused
on the affair. At the best it will be a
long a desperate struggle longer than most
people are willing to admit. and every
people are willing to admit. and every
man must do his duty. If he has not
the manliness to do it without force must
be employed to make him.
If I had a tiny sheet like
that you wrote me on I think I could fill
if. but it is a hopeless task on this one.
We had another big snow storm last
Sunday but there’s no signs of it left
now.
Yours with love and kiss.
