Regiment: 5th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Russell A. Alger Camp Cav Outposts June 10th 1863 My Dear Wife. Your favor of 1st [ ? ] Inst were duly received just before go- ing out on post three days since. Last evening we came in pretty tired and sleepy but well otherwise. To day is quite warm and dry we have had but very little rain for more than a month. Ive had a very quiet time while out but all the available force from the Cav Division are out on a raid or reconoisance in the direction of the Shenandoah I think they have been out two or three days if they accomplish anything [       ?       ] you will probably hear of it before this [   ?   ] yong. Frazer Seggett + the other Superm- merarils returned from Washington yesterday they got paid up to mar. 24” Frazer goes to N. Jersey and from then to Mich. They would gladly enter the service again I think if they could get the appointments We have a Col. at last. Lt. Col. Alger of the 6th Mich Cav has recd the appointment he is said to be an excellent office and very popular with the 6th. The health of the regt remains good. We have a good set of men. I think I have not seen a drunken officer or soldier for a month or more I have not been around much but I think these are not a thousand more temperate men to be found than the 5” Mich Cavalry. My contraband is a curiosity he is keen as a briar full of [   ?   ] his mase (Robt, Jackson) is a brother of the man that shot Col. Ellsworth. I presume you have seen Newcom by this time I presume he is enjoying his Citizenship hugely and Sus[ ? ] Company immensely to say nothing of lesser fe males. If I could see you I think I could enjoy your company fully as well as he does his friends. If we were off picket I should be quite anxious for you to come down and see us I think that unless the weather gets a great deal warmer than it is you could endure it We have had some very cool nights but it is getting wamer again I am enjoying good health am turned as black as a mulatto I can no longer boast of delicate look ing hands We have a standing order to have our horses saddled by 3 o’clock am but presume we will have to for only a few days till the force returns. I should think mother [ ? ]would be better satisfied where she is than at the the old homestead on the the end I recd a letter from J. W. Green who with his wife sends best wishes to you do you correspond with Mrs Green now. Do you correspond with Emma Knox, We fare pretty well on picket in the way of butter eggs, milk + c[ ? ] I recd a letter from Newcom serveral days since but have not answerd it as I thought he would not mind it much the first few days after his return will answer soon now Capt Gray is still in Fairfax Dick St Harris under arrest Do you think of going to W[   ?   ] I remember about the years promise I hope I shall be able to fulfill the contract that all may too but per- haps if I cannot you can come and see me-I think you had better invest a part of our money in the U.S. Bondras ar the 1st of July that privilege of converting treasury notes legal ten der bonds will experi excuse these horrid mis- takes With much love I am darling Your Own Egbert
