July 4th, 1863 My Dearest Wife, I have just a minute to spare and write to let you know that we were in the action yesterday and I escaped without a scratch. Our Co. lost several killed, wounded and missing. Maj. Ferry was killed by Sharp Shooters. Our Cav. repulsed the Rebs and we are masters of the field. You will know more of the battle as this reaches you than I can tell. I am now acting aid de camp with Gen. Custer Comdg. our Brigade probably will not act long however only till the battles are over here. Now keep up good courage I think I shall come out all right.
