Tuesday night Sept 30. 62
My dear Davidson
It is now midnight
and we have been busy packing for
a march to-morrow. We ar-
rived at Jeffersonville opposite
Louisville Sunday morning. We stayed
there until yesterday afternoon, when
we moved about a mile back
from the Ohio River on the In-
Diana shore and pitched tents.
To-night we have received march-
ing orders to report over in Ken-
tucky at day light to-morrow. The
whole army has gone in pursuit of
Bragg toward Cumberland Gap
They moved to-night We are
to be put in the advance with
the Michigan 2d Cavy. We
probably shall swell powder
in less than 48 hours. Our
regiment is totally unprepared for
any such experiment. No matter
we are in for it. I send by
express to Paw Paw my trunk.
I can not carry it with me,
so have cut myself down to
the merest necessities. In Niles
I saw the Pautlinds. Before you re-
turn to Kalamazoo I wish you w’d
go over and visit them. Did
you get my photographs Let Mrs
P. have one of the full length, full
face ones and a vignette if she
writes it. I am tired and very
sleepy and must stop. I do not
yet know where to tell you to write
