Regiment: 4th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Near Rome Ga. Oct 26, 1864 My dear Mother Since the 1st of this month we have been continually in the saddle so that it has been almost impossible for me to write a word to any body. Our rail road com- munications have also been broken so that we could neither receive nor send any mails. To-day for the first time we are allowed to rest. The rebel army I suppose you know has been North of us, and is supposed to be now crossing the Tennessee River. We shall probably be following it up until it is driver back again. Our command has been contin- ually marching and fighting and we can not see the end of it yet. I have yet escaped unharmed and never enjoyed better health. We are very tired though also rag- ged and dirty. Have not received a cent of pay in ten months and can not im- prove our wardrobes, until the very much desired paymaster giver us a call. We have been so continually at the front since spring that the timorous gentleman referred to could not reach us. We are however tolerably content and intend to see the thing through. I have not heard from any body at the North in two months. I suppose letters have been written me, and look with anxiety for the long delayed mail. We have some little hopes of being sent back to Nashville soon to be remounted as nearly all our horses have been killed or worn out. Has Willy left the service yet? Do some of you write to me soon. Tell Mary, Selah + the children I want to hear from them. I can not get away from here this fall as I had hoped. All fur- loughs, leaves of absence +c have been stopped I have not time to write more. With much love to you and the others. Your affect son Robert [On Envelope:] Mrs. M. Burns Care of S. Squires Esq Greene Chenango Co New York
