Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Detroit May 6, 1861. Dear Mother: I could not get time or material in time to write to you at south Jackson last week, so I did not write at all. We reached Detroit Tuesday about 6 P.M., marched about two miles to the Fair Ground and found that they were not ready for us. While we were waiting it began to rain, and were nearly wet through. Finally we were marched into on of the buildings on the ground and then waited near an hour. Then they marched us to the eating room, where we waited again near an hour. Then our chance came to get to the table; and O what a dining! for we had not had a meal since breakfast and it was about 9, P.M. Thus we marched about a half mile to a barn, and with the blankets they had given us, we piled in, We have not got our uniform yet. They say it is all done but buttons, & we shall have it soon. Some of the boys are not quite so patriotic as when they started. A good many have taken colds, & quite a number have the dysentery. I took a slight cold, but not much, Am getting nearly over it. Have no other dificulty. I stand it about the best of ay of them. I need not tell you to pray for me and us all, and the cause in which we are engaged. For I know you will. But I never so much same the need of prayer to keep us. My spirits and determination are as good as ever. We are to be mustered in to-day and then we shall know who stays, and who goes home. Write at once. Direct to me at Detroit, 2nd Regiment, Company K. Your affectionate son Caroden.
