On Board Steam
Transport Vanderbilt, Off
Alexandria, Va. March
18th 1862.
I just write you a
line as I do not know
when I can write again.
We came on board this
boat yesterday &, expect
to start down the river
to-day. We expect to go
to Fortress Munroe or
Burnside but do not know.
McClellan was here yes-
terday. He looks care-
worn. We are all confidence
in him, I hope you will
see his address to the army
of the Potomac. It is so
good. He will soon show
whether he is worthy of
our confidence or not.
I believe we shall be suc-
cessful. McClellan says
“The time for inaction
“has passed. I will now
“bring you face to face with
“the foe & only pray that God
“will protect the right. We
“will share all together.
Such are his words. How
thankful we aught to be
for a Christian
officer.
commander.
If God has a work for
me to do remember he
will protect me. If not
may I prepared to meet
Him.
I don’t know when this letter
will leave the boat.
Your son
Caroden.
P.S. The boat is just
starting. Let us have
faith in God.
