Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry
Battles Mentioned:
Historical Figures:
Fort Wayne, June 5th 1861,
Dear Mother & Sisters:
I rec’d Lucies letter
yesterday. I rec’d your other
two in due time, and the
six dollars. I shall send my
things home tomorrow. My
watch I think I will send by
express; the other things I presume
by fraight.
To-morrow at 3, P.M.
we are to start for Washington
We shall take boat down the
river for Cleaveland; thence
by Rail R. to PittsBurg Han’s-
Burg, and thence to Washington
I wish I could see you
all again, but if God will
otherwise, it will be best.
I shall soon probably be on
the field of battle. But let
us remember that God is there
as well as by the fireside at home
My prayer is that if God
calls me I may be ready; and
if it is His will I am
ready
willing, and
cheerful I think I can
be even in the face of death.
But I would rather wait and
labor more for Christ and
go Home with a crown full
of stars. If it is His will
that I should, and most for
His glory He
will protect &
preserve me. Let us leave it
there; and say “Even though there
slay me yet will I put my
trust in Thee”. If I have
done wrongly in doing as I
have, my He overrule it, and
guide me by his providence
He can as well as he did
the prophet Jonas, who tried
to flee from Him.
I am cheerful and firm as
ever, and growing fleshy all
the time.
The photographs I have
not got taken yet, I could not
[ ? ]. I hope I may before I leave
if not I think I can at Washington
and send them home from there.
Write very often. Direct as
usual, except to Washington instead
of Detroit.
Your Affectionate Son.
Caroden
