To the Family and Friends of C.S. Burge.
The sad
news has reached us that our friend and
classmate has fallen in battle. For this
event we were not prepared. Knowing
him well, which was to love him well,
we reluctantly parted with him a lit-
tle more than a year since. But
we did not suppose the parting was fi-
nal. We thought that with such pow-
wers of mind, & qualities of heart, as he
possessed, he had a
[ ? ] beyond that
of fighting his country’s battles, & we ex
pected to see him at the
close of the
war at least. But we have been
disappointed & we cannot but feel sad.
yet we have satisfaction in the thought
that while he
did live, he lived well.
As a student, he was one of
the first of his class – He was a
model student. A classmate, we repec-
ted him & were proud of him.
As a Christian, too. he was earnest,
consientions, faithful. He was a
giv-
ing Christian. For make so
[ ? ]
advances in
[ ? ] as he did. Among
his schoolmates his example was
unexceptionale.
When he enlisted we felt that
he was making too great sacrifices,
but he considered
[ ? ] that country
& God were calling him, we dare
not oppose. We have receiv-
ed frequent letters, from him, and
others have spoken of him & we are
assured that he was as faithful
a soldier as he was student. He
acted & felt not as one serving for
him, but as one contending for
“Liberty” and “The Right”
In his death we feel that we
have lost a valuable friend &
the world a useful laborer.
We most deeply sympathize with the
friends of the deceased, & trust there
will be found conselation in the
thought, that what the world has
lost. Heaven has gained.
