Dear Mother and Sisters:
You will see that I wrote the forgoing
as you will se just before we reached
Baltimor. We got there about duck. They did
not attack us while going through the city. We
were too strong for them; they rather applauded
us. We marched 1 ½ miles through the streets.
After we got on the train for Washington, a stone
was thrown at the cars in which Co. E, (Niles Co.)
were. Their Capt. gave orders to fire if another was
thrown. Soon another was thrown & hit the Orderly Sergeant
on the knee. He drew his gun and fired &
the man fell. They found us ready
and fled. We are four miles east of Washington
on the Potomac, on George Town Heights.
We are moving towards Harper’s Ferry. That will
probably be attacked this week, and we hope to be
there. We are now in the enimies country. Since
leaving home I have seen some of the most beautiful
scenery in America Its worth to me is invaluable.
My health is good as ever. If any thing better.
It is dreadful hot. I have been all over Washington, seen
the Capitol, White House, General Scott &c &c.
