Dear Mother:
We are now three miles
from Manassas Junction.
The Secessionists have a
battery here. We had a hard
battle here yesterday
& had
to which lasted three
yours hours. We had to
retreat, but in good order.
Our loss was near
two hundred, The Secess-
ionists seemed about as glad
to quit as we were, for they
stopped firing full as soon
as we did. They have
a masked battery, & are
concealed in the woods,
which was the reason of
our retreat. We are going
to attack them again to
day we are now lying in
the woods waiting orders.
We calculate to attack
them on all sides at once
to day. The result is with
God. If I fall receive it
as from God (for
[ ? ] disects
every
[ ? ]) and thinkof it as
for the best, and most for
his glory. But I don’t expect
to die though if I do, I hope
I am
[ ? ]. I would rather
live & do more for Him
before I die. But I would
leave it with him. I begin
to realize what war is.
I am well & in good
spirits. We can not write
except as we happen to have
a chance to send the letter.
You must not be alarmed
if you don’t hear from me
for weeks. Your Son Caroden
