Camp Mich. 2nd
Jan 31st 1862
Dear Mother:
I was on
guard yesterday so
I did not write. I
have only a few min-
utes this morn before
the mail carrier goes.
I am well now as
ever.
I expects to send
you my money before
this but I was waiting
to hear from you.
While waiting I found
there was a good Chance
to make money by buy-
ing things in Alexandria,
which the boys wanted
& selling them to the
boys at a profit. After
the boys get out of
money, too, they will
pay a large price
for money to be paid back
next pay day. They give
an order on the Pay-
master so it is safe.
So I do not think I
will send any home
now.
What is the matter?
I have not heard from
you since the 15
th of this
month.
If I could send my
old jacket home for
a pattern I would
have
like a blue “round-about”.
I will send you a
lithograph of our Col.
Our boys think a great
deal of him. He is not
a political man but
a thorough military man.
If he leads us into battle
our boys will feel that,
if they are killed, their
lives will not be thrown
any. We can not say
this of
all the officers.
You may think you
have mud in Mich.; but
you know nothing about
mud. It is mud, mud,
mud here and nothing
else.
Yours in haste
Caroden.
