Dear Mother:
I came near
for thing that it was my
day to write to you. I
rec’d your letter the 1
st
It was the first had
rec’d from you in nearly
three weeks. I rec’d a
letter from Lucy
Tuesday.
It seems that it
is very unhealthy at
Port Royal & in Ky.
It makes me think of
the plagues which God
sent upon the Egyptians
to make them let His
people go. Then is wail-
ing in many a home as they
& there will be in many
more. The oldest born &
the only son is taken from
dependant parents & loving
sisters. Will our nation con
tinue blind to their great
sin! I think it is the
policy of the Administra-
tion to crush the rebel-
ion & the deal with
slavery. How well
you
they will succeed we
shall see. Perhaps God
means to chasten us until
we will acknowledge our
sin & come out & take
a stand for liberty.
The
y cooks have called
to breakfast & now
could you look out
with me you would
see an interesting sight.
The
y boys are rushing
for the book house &
crowding & jaming to
each trying to get
breakfast first. It
is all in good nature
though. Should we
be taken into company
now we would hardly
know how to act
You must excuse
a short letter this
time, for I must go
to breakfast, & the
mail goes soon after
breakfast.
Your son
Caroden
