Feb. 15th 1862.
Dear Mother:
I think
that a letter will get to
you by the appointed
time if I do not write
till Saturday. I have
been so buisy this week
that I have wanted this
time.
We are all rejoicing
here now over Burnsides
success. I suppose it is
the same there, as you
probably heard of it as
soon as we did. The
night that the news
reached here the soldiers
were wild with joy, and
such cheering you never
heard, I presume. The
reg. fell out in line
& cheered. Then the band
struck up Yankee Doodle.
You don’t know how
good that simple old tune
sounds to a federal soldier
under such circumstances.
The news in the West
is cheering too. They have
called for six hundred
volunteers from the Army
of the Potomac to man
gunboats on the Missis-
sippi & other
[ ? ] river
Some from this reg. will
go I shall not. Does not
the time seem dark for the
rebels? I expect that this
part of the army will
not of move till the first
of April, for the roads will
not admit of an advanced
much before that time.
As soon as the roads are
dry I expect that we shall
have enough to do. We
have been having fine
weather for a few days
& the roads are nearly dry.
But I suppose that the
weather is uncertain.
My health is as good as
ever.
It is near mail time
so good bye for this time
Your son
Caroden.
