Regiment: 19th Indiana Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Washington, Sept. 2, 62 Mr. Benton: It is my melancholy duty to inform you, from the best information I can get, your son Thomas was killed in the battle of the 30th ult. His comrades say that he was wounded twice; once through the hips and bowels, and the second, and probably the most fatal shot was through the lungs. They were compelled to leave him on the field. He was most likely buried by the Secessionists, as they still hold that portion of the battlefield. I have written to the colonel to know what chance will be in recovering his body. I will let you know the result. Of the fate of Samuel McCown I am not advised. Some say he was killed, others that he was wounded and a prisoner. Yours respectfully, R. O. Dormer
