Dear Father:
I have not received a letter from you this week. And
as we are about to move, for fear I should not have an
opportunity of doing so for some time, I will now write you
a short letter. Last Tuesday morning at 4 A.M. our brigade
started out on a reconnoitering expedition. And we had two
fights while out. But our regt. was not engaged in either;
one nothing but the artillery and cavalry. The first
day we were resting at a small stream we heard the
enemy’s cannon. They were firing on our cavalry. We hurried
up and the enemy retreated, and it was the same the next
day. For a description of the march, see Sam’s letter to
his father. He has just written. I have no time to write
now. We have to get ready to march and join Pope at
Gordonsville. All are well. I will write again in a few
days.
T. H. Benton
Love to mother.
