Camp opposite Fredericksburg, Aug. 4th 1862
Dear Father:
I did not receive your letter until yesterday but
was glad to learn that all were well. Since I wrote last,
we have moved our camp. We are now three miles from the
Rappahannock. There is no prospect of us marching for some
time yet. I think we will stay here this month out. If we
are doing the government any good now I cannot see it. I
see by yesterday’s paper that Gen. Pope has commenced
moving toward Richmond from Warrenton. If we were going
with him, I think we would have started some days
ago. They have to keep a force at this place, and I think
we are destined to be the ones. I received a letter from
Ellen yesterday, and will answer it some other time. I am
on guard today, and have not much time to spare. There is
nothing new in camp. Give my love to all. I will write
again in a few days. Affectionately your son,
T. H. Benton
