Buell September the 26 1862 Dear frend I receive your leater last night I very glad to hear from you and to har you was well I am well toffar than ever than I ever was on labors has ben very hard this month we have march 400 miles this month I am in Ketuckey again the last day of last month we lef Steveson Alabama we have march through Tenessee and Kentuckey since we [ ? ] Steveson six weaks we built 7 stockades and one fort most of it was don by negros we had 400 of them at one time we was [ ? ] thare the last of last month and son as we was attact made we had orders of from Gen Bewel to leave the place so we had to obeay orders after we had got our fotication most dun the planters was about to com in town and take thar negros while others that lived a good ways of com with us som of them brot thare wives with them and thare small chrildren with them thay m arch the first few days and carred thare chrildren with them but coming   throught the mountains thay through thare chrildren a way [ ? ] was the though of freedom most all commish onds offcers has got one or three som more but thare is a good many in the count ry yet non of them can writ or read som of them are not a loud to try to lorn anting or to have the [ ? ] or the privlige of religion while som ore [ ? ] to read the bible and go to meetin the negrows are geral Blacks than thare north while others as white as anebody I have see some slaves that look no more a negro than I do As we left Stevenson every place was vachuated through to Nashville we have ben in the reer or Brag for som tim we had a fue curmishes with him but our offcrs let him get a way it is getting dark so I will haft to quit for to night you must excuse mistakes for I have marched so much nights it is hard work to wright we have not sleep in a tent but once the month we are in the edge of L osville right in the [ ? ] write often as you can yours truly William Wallice Bass
