THE GUARDIAN OF OUR LIBERTY
January the 8 1862
Dear friend William
I chose time and opportunity to
wright to you which is a thing
that I havent don before I hope
you will receive it with pleasur
this leaves me well and in hopes
this will find you the same
I suppose you know that I
have become a soldier since we
last met
that’s aint much
soldiern what our regiment
is doing guarding a thurnding old
dail road track that dont suit
me a bit I would much rather
doo a little fighting then I
could say that I have don
something for my country I
have been in the service five
month now I love this buisness
firststrate for it is not hard
work we drill fore hours in at
day and got on guard twice a
weak so that cant help suiting
one that is lazy espeslay one
like my self I can lay round
till day now and not mind it
the nearress that we have been
to the rebbils is one night
when thair was fore of our men
on picket guard at a bridge tharr
was a rebbil fiard on them
the ball plowing up the
ground pretty close by they
hadent the chance to return
the salute for the enney retreat
ed in the woods then a nother
time thair was a ball glazed
one of the mens ear that is
what we call close sheling in
this part for the tarnel
rebbils are so scarce I hope
by next spring that they
will have them all cleaned
out so that I could come home
and sea you all once more it has
been fore years since I have been
in that part of the world
thair is some hopes of us going
on a navill expedition to South
Carolina that will suit me if
we can only got you must
excuse me for not wrighting more
I wish you would answer
this for I should like
to here from I send my love and best wishes to
