Dec the 27 1861 Far distant friend I now sit down to answer it for I have not been able to answer it before I have been very sick since you the time you past[  ?  ] that and am just able to get around I recieved your picture after a long delay [  ?  ] the letter over in the third regiment and as soon as I got it I sit down to answer it allways like to hear from friends Missouri is a nice place but I guess that they will have all the fighting done before they get us armed  I have no arms of any discripsion and don’t drill [   ?   ] guess that they don’t calculate to keep us long by the rumor that the coh sail the other day that they hat mare men now than they could knew what to do with and if we wer armed before the to of January we would be sent home and I don’t care if they don’t to anything about the arms for I want to see all Michigan and ware don’t never mind the weather but get over double trouble for we are in the land of secessive I am a going to send my picture as soon as I get able to go down to the city I hat ought to have played [  ?  ] about a week longer for after I began to get before I [  ?  ] that they had a fourlough all male out to send me home the mille of this if I had known that I guess that I shoull have gone home but I had not here bout spoken a land worl for 5 weeks and when I spoke it make me feel like a [  ?  ] man and then I began to get beter and shall soon be armed with the rest of the boys and I don’t care hard quick for I have been sick for about six weeks and I began to feel discouraged but the weather is so nice that I could not stay sick mutch longer there is about 25 times as many men here as there was at grand rapids and there is three camps [   ?   ] fourteen [   ?   ] all [  ?  ] armed out [   ?   ] for fight the union men have taken thirteen hundred prisoners and they have telegraphed to me [   ?   ] to see what to do with them I expect to come home next spring for the fight is not a going to last long for they are getting Whipel out every peace that they have a [   ?   ] trial and the troops keep coming in all the whill to give general price same and he will get enough if he tries to take St. Louis you must excuse the various little suspects that I have chosen to write for my [   ?   ] [  ?  ] that way D to camp Benton St. MO 2 Mich Cavalry Co.
