Woodruff, Carle Augustus

About the Author

Born on August 8, 1841 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, Carle Augustus Woodruff was 20 years old when he enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Army Light Artillery Batty M on October 22, 1861 in Washington, D.C. He was mustered into service that same day. His promotions included: 1st Lieutenant, July 24, 1862; Captain by Brevet, July 3, 1863; Major by Brevet, June 11, 1864; Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, March 13, 1865; Captain, May 6, 1869; Major, March 8, 1894; and, Lieutenant Colonel, February 13, 1899. Woodruff was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 24, 1863 at Chester Gap, Virginia. He disregarded orders to abandon his gun and instead aided in repelling the attack, thus saving the guns. His date and method of discharge is unknown. Carle Augustus Woodruff died on July 20, 1913 in Raleigh, North Carolina and is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina.
