About the Author
Daniel T. Wells was born in Vermont but was residing in Detroit, Michigan when he enlisted in the 1st Michigan Cavalry Company E as a 2nd Lieutenant on December 1, 1861 at Washington, D.C. He was mustered into service that same day. On July 15, Wells was transferred from Company E to Company G. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 5, 1862. At the Battle of Second Bull Run in Virginia, Wells was taken prisoner on August 30 and was later paroled. On December 30, he was promoted to Captain and transferred from Company G to Company E. Wells was commissioned into the 8th United States Army Infantry on February 19, 1863 and was discharged on June 23. His other promotions included: 2nd Lieutenant, February 19; 1st Lieutenant by Brevet, September 29, 1864 at Fort Harrison, Virginia; Captain, April 2, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia; and, Major, April 2 at Fort Harrison, Virginia. Daniel T. Wells had subsequent service in the U.S. Army until he retired on August 7, 1897. He died on November 27, 1899.Documents for this Author:
