About the Author

Lewis Wallace was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana. He served in the Mexican War from June 18, 1846 until June 14, 1847. Wallace was residing in Crawfordsville, Indiana when he enlisted as a Captain in the 11th Indiana Infantry Company I on April 18, 1861. He was mustered into service at the age of 34 on April 25. On April 26, he was promoted to Colonel and transferred to Field and Staff. Wallace was discharged from service on August 4 at Indianapolis, Indiana. On September 3, he enlisted in the United State Volunteers General Staff as a Brigadier General. He was listed as being promoted to Major General on March 21, 1862. On August 14, he was discharged from his provisional appointment to the 66th Indiana Infantry. Lewis Wallace resigned from service on November 30, 1865. He died on February 15, 1905 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
