Residing in Niles, Michigan, Alexander Walker enlisted in the 7th Michigan Cavalry Company A on October 15, 1862. He was mustered into service as a Captain that same day. Walker was listed as being wounded on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On February 14, 1864, he was promoted to Major.
