About the Author
Quartermaster Sergeant George R. Stone, of Allegan, Michigan, enlisted at the age of 22 in the 3rd Michigan Cavalry Company A on September 6, 1861. He was mustered into service that same day. Stone was promoted to 1st Sergeant on March 26, 1862. On January 14, 1863, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant (supernumerary) and commissioned into the 4th Michigan Cavalry Company L. Other promotions he received included: 2nd Lieutenant, March 1; 1st Lieutenant, March 18; Quartermaster, March 18; and, Captain, August 25, 1864. He was transferred from Company L to Company A on September 22. From January 1865 to May 1865, Stone was Acting Assistant Quartermaster of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division. George R. Stone was discharged on July 1 at Nashville, Tennessee. He resided in Jackson, Michigan after the war.Documents for this Author:
