About the Author

James Stewart was residing in Detroit, Michigan when he enlisted in the 14th Michigan Infantry on December 6, 1861 at Detroit. He was mustered into Company G as a 26-year old 1st Sergeant on January 7, 1862. Stewart received several promotions including: 2nd Lieutenant, December 1; 1st Lieutenant, June 4, 1863; and, Captain, March 14, 1865. He became the Aide-de-Camp on staff of General William Vandever of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 14th Army Corps on April 30. James Stewart was discharged from service on July 18 at Louisville, Kentucky.
