Residing in Wayne County, Michigan, Private Oscar Smith enlisted in the 1st Michigan Cavalry Company C on September 24, 1861 at Detroit, Michigan. He was mustered into service that same day. On June 30, 1863, Smith was promoted to Corporal. He was wounded on July 3 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he was also captured. He was transferred from Company C to Company H on March 6, 1864.
