Private John F. Settle, of Oakland County, Michigan, enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Cavalry Company I on September 2, 1861 at Pontiac, Michigan. He was mustered into service on October 3 at the age of 29. On January 1, 1862, Settle was transferred from the 3rd Michigan Cavalry to the 1st Michigan Light Artillery Batty C. John F.
