About the Author
Charles H. Safford, of Detroit, Michigan, enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Michigan Cavalry Company I on August 14, 1862. He was mustered into service that same day at the age of 24. He received several promotions, including: 1st Lieutenant, June 13, 1863; Captain and Acting Assistant Adjutant General, July 15, 1864; and, Major by Brevet, March 13, 1865. Charles H. Safford was discharged on January 23. He lived in Black River, Michigan after the war.Documents for this Author:
