Residing in Ionia County, Michigan, Sergeant Daniel S. Root enlisted at the age of 23 in the 3rd Michigan Infantry Company K on May 13, 1861 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was mustered into service on June 10. He received several promotions while serving in the 3rd Michigan Infantry, including: 2nd Lieutenant, November 28; 1st Lieutenant of Company A, July 1, 1862; and, Captain of Company D, February 5, 1863. On February 18, 1864, Root was transferred from Company K to Company A. He was then transferred to the 5th Michigan Infantry Company A on June 10. His promotions while serving with the 5th Michigan Infantry included Major on June 12 and Lieutenant Colonel on December 21. Daniel S. Root was discharged on July 5, 1865 at Jeffersonville, Indiana.Documents for this Author:
