About the Author
Christian Rath, of Jackson, Michigan, enlisted in the 17th Michigan Infantry Company G on August 9, 1862 at Jackson. He was mustered into service as a 30-year old 2nd Lieutenant on August 18. Rath was listed as wounded on September 17 at Antietam, Maryland. He received several promotions including: 1st Lieutenant, December 6; Captain, August 4, 1863; Major by Brevet, April 12, 1865; and, Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, July 18, 1865. On May 12, 1864, he was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia and later escaped from an undisclosed location. Christian Rath was discharged from service on July 19, 1865 and he lived in Jackson, Michigan after the war.Documents for this Author:
