About the Author
Byron Root Pierce was born on September 20, 1829 in East Bloomfield, New York. Pierce was living in Grand Rapids, Michigan when he enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Infantry Company K on May 13, 1861. He was mustered into service as a Captain on June 10 at the age of 31. His transfer from Company K to Field and Staff happened on October 28 due to him being promoted to Major. He received other promotions while serving in the 3rd Michigan Infantry, including: Lieutenant Colonel, July 25, 1862; and, Colonel, January 1, 1863. Pierce was also wounded several times at these locations: Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 2; Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on May 12, 1864; and, Petersburg, Virginia on June 18. On June 4, he was promoted to Brigadier General and was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers General Staff on June 7. Pierce was promoted to Major General by Brevet on April 6, 1865 for his gallant service at Sailor’s Creek, Virginia. Byron R. Pierce was discharged on August 24. He returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he died on July 10, 1924.Documents for this Author:
