Henry Patterson enlisted as a Private in the 1st Michigan Light Artillery Batty G on November 20, 1863. He was mustered into service that same day at the age of 19. On August 25, 1864, Patterson transferred to the Navy. He served as a Seaman on the U.S.S. Hastings.
