Norton, Elliott Malloy

About the Author

Elliott Malloy Norton was born on June 15, 1834 in Connecticut. He was residing in Wayland, Michigan when he enlisted as a Private in the 6th Michigan Cavalry Company B on November 21, 1862 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was mustered into service at the age of 27 on December 4. Norton received several promotions including: Sergeant, April 1, 1863; 2nd Lieutenant of Company H, July 1, 1864; Sergeant Major, August 6; and, 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant, January 4, 1865. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on April 6 at Sailor’s Creek, Virginia. Norton rushed ahead of his column and captured the flag of the 44th Tennessee Infantry. On November 7, he was transferred from the 6th Michigan Cavalry to the 1st Michigan Cavalry. Elliott Malloy Norton was discharged from service on March 10, 1866 at Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on January 5, 1899 in Carson City, Michigan. He is buried at the Liberty Street Cemetery in Alamo Township, Michigan.
