About the Author
In Dowagiac, Michigan on August 15, 1861, Janes McElheny of Mattawan, Michigan enlisted in Company M of the 1st Michigan Cavalry. He was 21 years old when mustered into service on September 7. His promotions included: Sergeant, January 15, 1862; Sergeant Major, October 15; 2nd Lieutenant, November 12; and, 1st Lieutenant, May 18, 1863. On July 4, Janes McElheny died at Fairfield Gap, Maryland.Documents for this Author:
