About the Author

Allen P. Huggins, of Niles, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 5^th Michigan Cavalry Company C on August 14, 1862 at Detroit, Michigan. He was mustered into service at the age of 23 on August 27. Huggins was discharged from service on December 4 at Detroit, Michigan. On December 11, he re-enlisted in the 8^th Michigan Cavalry Company D and was mustered into service on January 20, 1863. He was promoted to Commissary Sergeant and 1^st Lieutenant on May 15, 1864. In December, he became the Acting Commissary of Subsistence of the 2^nd Brigade, 6^th Division Cavalry. During July of 1865, Huggins was promoted to 1^st Lieutenant. Allen P. Huggins was discharged from service on September 22, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
