About the Author

Residing in Plymouth, Michigan, Corporal Harvey S. Heywood enlisted at the age of 26 in the 4th Michigan Cavalry Company D on July 28, 1862. He was mustered into service on August 28. Heywood was listed as being wounded at Sparta, Tennessee on August 17, 1863. His promotions included: Sergeant, May 15; 2nd Lieutenant, July 9, 1864; 1st Lieutenant, December 21; and, Captain, May 19, 1865. On February 11, he was transferred from Company D to Company L. Heywood served as General James H. Wilson’s Aide-de-Camp in February. Harvey S. Heywood was discharged on September 1 at Detroit, Michigan. He lived in Wayne, Michigan after the war.
