About the Author
On May 10, 1861, Sergeant George H. Evens enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Infantry Company B at Hudson, Michigan. He was mustered into service on May 25, 1861 at the age of 20. Evens was promoted to 1st Sergeant on August 25, 1862. He was transferred from the 2nd Michigan Infantry to the 17th Michigan Infantry on January 30, 1864 and to the Veteran Reserve Corps at Louisville, Kentucky on January 1, 1865. On May 5, 1862, Evens was wounded at Williamsburg, Virginia and then again at Knoxville, Tennessee on November 24, 1863. George H.
