About the Author
Lewellyn Garrish Estes was born December 27, 1843 in Oldtown, Maine. Estes enlisted as a Sergeant in the 1st Maine Cavalry on October 19, 1861. He was mustered into service that same day. He was promoted while serving in the 1st Maine Cavalry to 1st Lieutenant on March 24, 1862 and then to Captain on June 18, 1863. Estes was taken prisoner in the Spring of 1862 and was paroled on June 15, 1862 at Annapolis, Maryland. On September 4, 1863, he was discharged for promotion to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General of the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department. His other promotions included: Major, February 2, 1865; Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, March 13; Colonel by Brevet, March 13; and, Brigadier General by Brevet, March 13. He was discharged on September 29. Lewellyn Garrish Estes died on February 21, 1905 in Washington, D. C. and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.Documents for this Author:
